Born in Paris, Louis-Joseph, duke de Vendôme et Penthièvre, the grandson of François duke de beaufort, was one of the most outstanding French commanders in the War (1701-14) of the Spanish succession. He campaign in italy and in Flanders (the Battle of Oudenaarde, 1708), and defeated King Philip V of Spain at Madrid (Battle of Villavi-ciosa, 1710).
